What we do

A sharp reel is not the same as a true one

Grinding restores two things at once, an edge that cuts cleanly and a cylinder that is round and parallel across its whole width. Backlapping can help with the first. Only a grind fixes the second, and the second is what most quality of cut complaints turn out to be.

Spin grinding, relief grinding, bedknife top and front angle grinding, cone and taper correction, land width, reel to bedknife contact, height of cut reset and the after cut appearance that all of it produces.

Grinding the reel and leaving the bedknife is half the work, because the two only cut against each other. A worn bedknife has lost its front angle and gained thickness, which changes the effective height of cut and the attitude of the cut long before anyone blames the reel. Both come back to specification together or neither of them is fixed.

A reel can measure correctly and still cut badly once contact, bedknife attitude and height of cut are wrong. We finish the job at the setting stage rather than at the grinder, because that is where the cut is actually decided.

A new edge on the reel working against a thickened bedknife with a lost front angle gives you a cut that disappoints within a week. The pair is the cutting tool, so the pair gets brought back to specification.

Some reels are down to the last of their usable diameter and grinding again buys very little. We would rather tell you the unit is near the end than take material off it and hand you the same problem next season.

 
Three different jobs

Backlapping spin grinding and relief grinding

These get treated as three strengths of the same thing and they are not. Each corrects something the one before it cannot, and using the first where you needed the third is the most expensive habit in a reel shop.

  1.  BacklappingLapping compound run between reel and bedknife to clean up an edge that has just started to dull. It is quick, it happens in your own shop and it has a real place between grinds. What it cannot do is make a coned reel round again, narrow a land that has worn wide or restore a bedknife angle, and used as a substitute for grinding it eventually rolls the edge instead of sharpening it.
  2.  Spin grindingThe reel is spun against a traversing wheel so every blade is cut to the same diameter across the full width. This is what takes cone and taper out and gives you a cylinder that cuts the same at both ends, which is the fix for a unit that has been leaving a band down one side. It sharpens and it trues, and for most maintenance intervals it is the whole answer.
  3.  Relief grindingEach blade is ground individually to put relief behind the cutting edge and bring the land back to a narrow, consistent width. Less metal touching the bedknife means less friction, less heat and an edge that lasts, and the unit will hold a clean cut on much lighter contact. This is the one that gets skipped by a shop without the right grinder, and it is why some reels never seem to stay sharp.

Four steps and the cut proved before it leaves

A grind that ends at the grinder is not finished. The last step is the one that decides whether the surface actually changes, so it is part of the job rather than something handed back to your crew.

    Send the units or the machine

    Tell us the make and model, the number of units, the height of cut you run and roughly how long since the last grind. Whether it suits you better to drop cutting units or bring the whole machine, say so when you get in touch and we will confirm what works for your schedule.

  2.   
    Inspect and measure first

    Reel diameter against the usable minimum, cone and taper across the width, land width, bearing and shaft condition, bedknife thickness and angle, and whether the backing and the frame are still true. This is where a unit that is not worth grinding gets identified, before anyone spends money on it.

  3.   
    Grind the reel and the bedknife

    Spin ground to true the cylinder, relief ground where the land has worn wide and the unit needs to hold an edge, and the bedknife brought back to its front and top angles rather than simply faced off. Both parts finished to the unit specification, because they only work as a pair.

    Set the contact and prove the cut

    Contact set light and even across the width, height of cut reset because the bedknife thickness has changed, and the cut proved rather than assumed. A unit that leaves here should be ready to work, not ready to be adjusted on the first green on a Monday morning.

Reel grinding and bedknife service

What is reel grinding and why does it matter?

Grinding restores the cutting geometry of a reel mower. It sharpens the blades, brings the reel back to a true cylinder across its full width, and takes the reel and bedknife back to the angles they were designed to cut at. It matters because a sharp reel severs the leaf cleanly while a dull one tears and bruises it, and torn tissue loses moisture, grays off and gives disease an easy way in. The cut quality you see is the visible half of an agronomic problem.

What is the difference between spin grinding and relief grinding?

Spin grinding turns the reel against a traversing wheel so every blade is cut to the same diameter, which sharpens the edges and trues the cylinder. Relief grinding treats each blade individually, putting relief behind the cutting edge so the land is narrow and consistent. Spinning fixes shape and sharpness. Relieving reduces friction and heat so the edge lasts and the unit cuts on lighter contact. Most units want both over their life, and a reel that never seems to stay sharp is usually one that has only ever been spun.

How often should reels be ground?

Interval follows wear rather than the calendar. Hours matter, but so does what the reel is cutting through, and heavy sand topdressing is abrasive enough to take an edge off far faster than the hour meter suggests. Greens units on a sand program need attention more often than fairway units on the same number of hours. The practical answer is to set the interval from your own after cut appearance and land width rather than from a number somebody quoted for a different course.

Is backlapping enough or do I need a grind?

Backlapping has a real place between grinds and it will bring back an edge that has only just started to dull. What it cannot do is correct shape. A coned or tapered reel, a land that has worn wide, or a bedknife that has lost its front angle will all survive backlapping untouched, and lapping a badly worn edge eventually rolls it rather than sharpening it. If the cut goes off again quickly after a lap, that is the signal that the geometry needs grinding rather than the edge needing another pass.

Do you grind bedknives as well as reels?

Yes, and we would not do one without looking at the other. The reel and the bedknife are a single cutting tool, and a fresh reel edge working against a thickened bedknife with a lost front angle will disappoint within days. Bedknives get ground back to their front and top angles rather than simply faced off flat, because those angles are what let the pair shear the leaf instead of trapping it.

Do I send the whole machine or just the cutting units?

Either works, and it usually comes down to what keeps your fleet cutting. Sending units alone means the machine stays available, and it suits a course rotating through a set over several weeks. Sending the machine makes sense when you want the contact, the height of cut and the way the units carry on that specific mower all checked together. Tell us which suits your schedule and we will confirm the arrangement before anything moves.

How do I know my reels need grinding?

The surface tells you first. A grayish or brown cast across the turf a day after mowing is torn leaf tips rather than a fertility problem. Stragglers left standing, a banded strip down one side of a unit, a cut that goes off within a few days of a backlap, or reels that need heavier and heavier contact to cut at all are all pointing the same way. On the bench, a wide shiny land on the blade faces and a bedknife that has visibly thickened confirm it.

Which cutting units do you grind?

Greens, tee, approach, fairway, trim and rough reel units from the makes that run here, most often Toro, John Deere, Jacobsen, Cushman, Kubota, Steiner, Turfco, Smithco and Dakota. Will grinding change my height of cut?

Yes, and this is the step that gets missed. Grinding removes material from the reel and from the bedknife, and a thinner bedknife sitting differently in its holder changes the effective height of cut even though nobody moved an adjuster. Height of cut is reset and checked after the grind as part of the job, which is also why a unit that comes back from a grind and then mows lower than expected has usually not had that last step done.
