Our expertise goes beyond sales. We consult on turf equipment problems, and on aeration that means the whole decision rather than the machine on its own, because the tine you choose and the week you choose are the same question asked twice.

Core aeration, solid and needle tine work, deep tine venting, slicing, tine size and spacing, hole percentage, depth, ground speed, soil moisture, core cleanup, topdressing and the recovery window either side of it.

Every aeration is a trade between the disruption you can afford and the relief the soil actually needs. Change the tine and the timing has to move. Change the window and the depth and the spacing move with it. Getting one of the three right and the other two wrong is how a course loses two weeks of surface.

Four questions before a tine goes in the ground

None of these can be answered on its own. We work them in this order because each one narrows the next, and because the last one is the one most programs underestimate.

  1. Timing and the calendar

    Turf only recovers from aeration while it is actively growing, and in Southwest Florida the strongest recovery window sits squarely inside the season when nobody wants the greens disturbed. That tension is the real problem to solve. We work back from your play calendar, your growth curve and how much healing time each option actually needs.

  2. Tine and machine selection

    Hollow tines remove material, solid tines relieve without removing, needle tines vent with almost no disruption and slicing does something different again. Tine diameter, wall thickness, spacing and the action of the machine itself all change the hole you end up with, and a heavier disruption in a narrow window is often the wrong answer.

  3. Depth spacing and speed

    Depth and spacing decide the percentage of surface you actually affect, which is the number that matters rather than the number of passes. Ground speed has to suit the tine action or the holes tear and the surface heaves. Soil moisture on the day decides whether you get a clean hole, a smeared wall or a broken tine.

  4. Cleanup and recovery

    Whether cores come off or get worked back in, how much sand goes on and how it is brushed in, when to roll and when to leave it alone. This is where an aeration is won or lost in the eyes of the membership, and it is the part most likely to be under equipped when the day arrives.

The event itself

Before the day and after it

  1. Before the eventTines counted, checked and fitted before the week rather than on the morning. Depth set and proved on a nursery green or an out of play area. Aerator, topdresser, sweeper and transport all serviced together, because the whole chain runs on the same day. Soil moisture managed so the ground is neither too wet to hold a hole nor too dry to take one.
  2. The day itselfGround speed matched to the tine action, direction planned so passes do not follow the same line every event, depth held consistently across the whole surface, and someone watching the hole quality rather than the clock. Most of the damage that shows up a week later was decided in the first hour of the first green.

Aeration timing equipment and technique

When is the best time to aerate turf in Southwest Florida?

Warm season turf only heals from aeration while it is actively growing, so the strongest recovery sits in the warm months rather than the cool season play peak. That is the conflict every course here has to solve, because the best agronomic window and the busiest tee sheet do not always line up. The practical answer is to match the severity of the aeration to the recovery time you can genuinely protect, and to use lighter venting in the windows where a full coring would not heal in time.

What is the difference between hollow tine and solid tine aeration?

A hollow tine pulls a core out and physically removes material, which is what you want when organic matter has to come off and be replaced with sand. A solid tine makes a channel without removing anything, so it relieves compaction and improves gas exchange with far less disruption and a faster recovery. Needle tines vent with almost no visible mark at all. They are not interchangeable, and choosing by disruption alone rather than by what the soil actually needs is the most common mistake we see.

How deep and how close together should the holes be?

Depth and spacing together decide the percentage of the surface you actually affect, and that number matters far more than how many passes you made. Deeper and tighter is not automatically better, because it costs recovery time you may not have and it can heave the surface if the ground speed does not suit it. Varying depth between events also matters, so you are not building a compacted layer at the same depth every year.

Do I need a dedicated aerator or will a tow behind unit do?

It depends on the surface and the window. Greens generally justify a dedicated unit, because hole quality and consistency at low heights are what the members see afterwards. Fairways, roughs and sports fields are often served perfectly well by a tow behind unit on a tractor you already own. We would rather tell you your current setup is adequate than sell you something the calendar does not require.

Should I remove the cores or work them back in?

If the point of the aeration is to dilute organic matter and exchange the rootzone material, the cores come off and clean sand goes back. If the soil is sound and you are chasing compaction relief rather than material exchange, working them back in saves labor and returns soil to the profile. The decision follows the reason you aerated in the first place, which is why that reason is worth agreeing before the machine is booked.

How long does the surface take to recover?

It depends far more on tine choice, growth rate and the recovery work than on the aeration itself. A needle tine venting can be almost invisible the same week, while a full coring in a slow growth period can be visible for a month. Topdressing rate, brushing, rolling, irrigation and fertility all move that number, which is why the recovery plan is part of the consultation rather than an afterthought.

Do you advise on verticutting as well?

Yes. Verticutting consultation covers equipment selection and guidance specific to your turf, and it sits naturally alongside aeration because the two do related jobs on the same surface at different depths. Performance troubleshooting and diagnostics on the machines themselves is a separate service, and the three are often booked together before a season starts.

Can you look at our aerator before the season starts?

That is the single most useful time to ask. Tine condition and count, holder wear, depth setting, drive and hydraulic condition and the state of the topdresser and cleanup equipment all decide whether the week runs or stalls. A machine that failed halfway through last season will fail halfway through this one unless something changed, and finding that in advance costs a fraction of finding it on the day.

What do you need from me to advise on our aeration program?

The surfaces involved and their turf type, what you ran last season and when, the tines and machines you own, your play calendar and any events that cannot move, and what you were unhappy with last time. Photographs of the surface a week after the last aeration are especially useful, because they show what actually happened rather than what was planned.
